An encounter broke out between security forces and militants in the Panthachowk area of Srinagar outskirts late on Thursday night.
An official said that a joint team of police and CRPF had laid a cordon in the area to arrest a suspect.
He said that as the joint team of forces intensified searches towards the suspected spot, they came under massive fire.
Locals meanwhile said that a fierce exchange of fire is on in the area and two to three militants are believed to be trapped in the area.
As per the latest reports, one police personnel has been injured during the exchange of gunfire.
The firing was going on when this report was filed.
