Non-availability of Anaesthesia technicians in Srinagar Hospital creates problems for patients

Gousia Hospital here in Kashmir capital Srinagar has no Anaesthesia technician as a result no surgery is taking place in the same hospital.

“My maternal uncle was supposed to undergo gallbladder surgery but due to the non-availability of the Anaesthesia technician, we left for home without the operation,” Mehraj Ahmed, an attendant told news agency Kashmir News Trust.

Anesthesia technicians are healthcare professionals who oversee activities related to anaesthetics. They administer anesthesia to patients and assist doctors in related activities. They also monitor the patient after the anaesthesia is administered to ensure that no harmful side effects occurred.

Government Gousia Hospital is listed under Public Hospitals and is located in Khanyar, Srinagar.

Another patient said that the Anaesthesia technician in the hospital has been missing for the past 10 days while hospital administration does nothing to improve the ailing healthcare system in the hospital.

Insiders said that there is a couple both Anaesthesia technicians posted in the Gousia Hospital who are on leave and right now in New Delhi as their son is suffering from an ailment. “This couple had applied for the leave after their son developed some health issues and they are treating him in a Delhi hospital. Medical Superintendent even wrote a letter to Director Health Service requesting him to post an Anesthesia technician in the hospital for some time, but even after 10 days, there is no response from the Directorate of Health Services Kashmir.”

As usual, when contacted, Director Health said he is in a meeting and will talk later.

The spokesperson, Directorate of Health Services Kashmir Dr Mir Mushtaq told KNT that both the technicians in the Gousia Hospital have gone on emergency leave and if they won’t join their duties within a couple of days, temporary arrangements will be made. “We are lacking manpower as for as the number of these technicians is concerned but yes, we will deploy some technicians in the said hospital if the technicians on leave don’t turn up within a day or two,” he said.
