On Eid day, Islamic seminary demolished in Kanpur ‘without any notice’

The authorities in Uttar Pradesh on Eid day demolished an Islamic seminary in the Ghatampur area of Kanpur.

According to news reports, the officials of the Uttar Pradesh administration along with the Police reached the Madrassa Islamia Ghatampur in Kanpur and demolished the structure without serving any notice to the seminary.

Calling the demolition illegal, the principal of the seminary said, “We do not know why the Seminary was demolished when we have all the legal papers. Nobody even served us a notice. We did not even get time to take out the holy books including Quran from inside the Seminary.”

They said that on Eid day the officials of Kanpur Municipal Corporation reached the seminary along with bulldozers and immediately left. “We tried to present the papers to the officials, but the officials had left the spot immediately after reaching the demolition was started. The officials only returned to the spot after the structure has been brought down,” he said.

The incident had triggered anger across social media and users have been calling for action against the “illegal” demolition drive.

In a video that has gone viral over social media, Muslims can be seen collecting their holy books including the Quran Shareef from underneath the rubble and saying they were provided no time to even take out the holy texts from the seminary.
