A total of 1724 people have been killed by militant violence in Kashmir in the last 31 years, an RTI revealed, Of these, Kashmiri Pandits are 5 percent, while 95 percent of Muslims and people from other communities. Of the total 154,161 people who migrated from Kashmir, 88 percent are Kashmiri Pandits and the remaining 12 percent are others. Cold conditions intensified in J&K and Ladakh as Srinagar had coldest night of the season with mercury plunging to minus 3.9°C. The weatherman has forecast dry weather till December 23 with “further fall” in mercury in coming days and predicted “white Christmas” in J&K and Ladakh. A militant of Hizbul Mujahideen was killed in an overnight encounter at Uzrampathri area of South Kashmir’s Pulwama district on Wednesday. A top police officer confirmed to GNS about killing of Hizb militant, while identifying him as Feroz Ahmad Dar resident of Shopian. Dar had joined militant ranks in 2017 and was involved in many militancy related incidents, the officer added. An encounter broke out between security forces and militants in Usgam Pathri area of Rajpora hamlet in South Kashmir's Pulwama district, officials said on Wednesday. An official told the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that a joint of team of police, Army and CRPF after receiving information about the presence of militants launched search operation in the area. He said that as the joint team of forces intensified searches towards suspected spot, the hiding militants fired upon the party, which was retaliated, thus triggering an encounter.
