Save money and eat fresh: 5 vegetables to grow in containers at home

INDIA
As vegetable prices continue to soar across urban centers like Srinagar and other towns in India, growing vegetables at home has become more than a hobby; it is a necessity. With reduced local production and heavy reliance on imports, residents are turning to rooftops, balconies, and even window sills to cultivate small vegetable patches. Urban gardening not only reduces kitchen expenses but also ensures access to fresh, chemical-free produce. In most urban areas, people live in houses with little to no land. But even if you do not have a garden, you can still grow your own vegetables in pots placed on rooftops, balconies, courtyards, or sunny windows. It is a practical solution for those living in cramped spaces, and it requires minimal investment. Here are five easy-to-grow vegetab...

BJP leader asks people to not visit Kashmir

INDIA
Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly and BJP state president Suvendu Adhikari has stirred controversy with his call urging Bengalis not to visit “Muslim-majority” areas in Jammu Kashmir, following the recent killing of tourists in Pahalgam. “Don’t go to Muslim-majority areas,” Adhikari said during a public interaction on Friday. “If you want to visit Kashmir, go to Jammu. Otherwise, go to Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Odisha—there are plenty of places to travel. In Pahalgam, they asked tourists their religion before killing them.” His comments came a day after Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah met West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in Kolkata, where she emphasized that the safety of tourists in Kashmir is the responsibility of the central governm...

REGIONAL
Bhat Yasir In an age where development often comes at the cost of greenery, Abdul Ahad Khan, a 42-year-old labourer from Nagri Malpora in north Kashmir’s Kupwara, is quietly scripting a green resistance. Popularly known as the “Chinar Man of Kashmir”, a title unofficially bestowed upon him by forest officials and villagers alike, Khan has spent the past 15 years planting trees—especially Chinars, the iconic symbols of Kashmir’s heritage and ecology. His dream? To plant 50,000 trees in his lifetime, a goal that grows more urgent as Kashmir continues to lose its tree cover at an alarming rate. Just last month, a government-backed report revealed that over six lakh trees were cut along the banks of the Jhelum River, many of them to make way for flood channel expansion and other "anti...

Court dismisses villagers’ petition against road over Tral irrigation canal

REGIONAL
The High Court of Jammu Kashmir and Ladakh has dismissed a petition filed by seven residents of Chewa-Ullar village in Tral, Pulwama, who sought to halt the construction of a rural link road allegedly built over a traditional irrigation canal. The court found no evidence of "wrongdoing or malafide" intent in the project and upheld the authorities' decision, citing public interest and technical assessments. The villagers had claimed that the road project, laid over land recorded as an irrigation canal and drainage channel in official records, would block water flow critical for farming and was meant to benefit influential individuals. “This road is not a development project, it’s a disaster in the making for our fields,” said Abdul Gani, one of the petitioners. “It cuts right throu...
