After weeks of silence, elderly Kashmiri farmers restore life to Nandi irrigation Canal

REGIONAL
Suhail Dar In a remarkable act of collective resolve, residents of several areas of south Kashmir’s Anantnag and Kulgam districts took it upon themselves to restore irrigation water to the Nandi canal, one of the largest traditional irrigation channels in the region, after years of official apathy and destructive mining practices rendered it nearly dry. The water for the Nandi is drawn from the Weshav river, a once reliable source, which has seen a dramatic drop in water levels in recent years. Locals have blamed unregulated mining and extraction of riverbed materials, stating it has caused the riverbed to sink far below the canal’s traditional intake point. MLA Devsar, Feroz Ahmad Shah recently said, "Unregulated and illegal mining has degraded the natural water catchments. This ...

US slams India for denying Trump’s role in ceasefire with Pakistan

INTERNATIONAL
The US State Department on Tuesday (local time) criticised India's stance on the US playing no role in the ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan, describing such claims as potentially misguided. During a press briefing, US State Department Spokesperson Tammy Bruce responded to questions about the diverging narratives from Indian and Pakistani officials regarding US involvement in brokering a peace deal after escalated tensions between the two nations following the April 22 Pahalgam Terror Attack and India's retaliation through 'Operation Sindoor' that targeted nine terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir. Bruce offered a nuanced response to the question, emphasising transparency in the modern era and suggesting that the factual record is accessible a...

Earth’s rotation is getting faster, shortening upcoming days

EDUCATION
Earth is spinning slightly faster than usual this month, and scientists say this isn’t the first time it’s happened. On July 9, the planet completed its rotation a little quicker than normal, shaving off about 1.3 milliseconds from the standard 24-hour day. And it’s expected to happen again soon. According to researchers, July 22 and August 5 will also see shortened days due to the moon’s position in relation to Earth’s equator. On those dates, Earth’s rotation is predicted to speed up enough to reduce the day by between 1.3 and 1.5 milliseconds. A day is typically 86,400 seconds, the time it takes Earth to complete a full rotation. However, various factors can influence this, including the gravitational pull from the moon and sun, changes in Earth’s magnetic field, large-scale...

Villagers are deeply concerned about what they describe as a complete lack of administrative response. Many allege that no official from the district administration or even the local MLA has visited the area to assess the damage or offer assistance. “We are suffering badly. Water has entered our homes and shops, and no official has come to see our plight. We appeal to the district adm...

Israel stops calling Al Sharaa terrorist amid indirect talks and U.S. mediation

INTERNATIONAL
Israel has stopped publicly referring to Syria’s new president, Ahmed al-Sharaa, as a terrorist, a striking change in tone that reflects the shifting political landscape in the Middle East following the ouster of Bashar al-Assad, New York Times reported. This rhetorical shift, from branding al-Sharaa a jihadist with ties to Al Qaeda to recognizing him as Syria’s de facto head of state, coincides with indirect talks between Israel and Syria, which are underway, according to the New York Times report. It is the most serious diplomatic engagement between the two countries in more than a decade. In the immediate aftermath of Assad’s fall in December 2024, Israeli officials, including Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar, had warned that Syria had fallen into the hands of a “terrorist gang,” ...
