In the aftermath of the deadly militant attack in Pahalgam, a wave of panic has gripped tourists from in Kashmir.
Amid this, the airlines operating from Srinagar have sharply increased their airfares to various cities including Delhi and Bangalore.
One-way tickets from Srinagar to Bangalore today are priced at 22,000 rupees, while fares for April 24 range between 20,000 and 33,000 rupees. Tickets from Srinagar to Delhi have also surged, costing between 9,000 and 28,000 rupees today, and 11,000 to 28,000 rupees tomorrow.
To address the sudden demand, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has asked airlines to monitor fares closely and keep pricing within reasonable limits. “We are coordinating with all major carriers to increase capacity on Srinagar routes and ensure compliance with fare regulation guidelines,” a DGCA official said.
The Ministry of Civil Aviation is also working with carriers to arrange additional flights and ease congestion at Srinagar airport, where scenes of anxious travellers waiting in long queues have become common.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed sorrow over the exodus, calling the situation “heartbreaking.” He assured that all steps are being taken to facilitate the safe and organised movement of tourists, both by air and through the partially reopened Srinagar-Jammu National Highway.
