Panic across as Jammu Kashmir goes offline

Mobile internet, broadband, and phone services have been disrupted across Jammu Kashmir since around 4 PM. Officials attribute the outage to extensive damage to optical fibre lines at multiple locations, triggered by continuous rainfall.

This is not the first instance of internet suspension in Kashmir. While some users report a complete loss of connectivity, others complain of severely reduced internet speed and persistent disruptions.

The official sources told The Kashmiriyat that the situation is being closely monitored and that there is no need to panic. Technical teams are on the ground to restore services, but for now, calls are failing and internet access is completely suspended across all networks.

About the outage, the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on his X account said,

As the heavy rainfall continues, the officials are alarmed about flood mitigation strategies across Jammu Kashmir.

In view of the incessant rains, the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah wrote earlier today on his X handle:

As the telecom operators restore connectivity at several locations, they assured that efforts are underway while the situation is being monitored.

Meanwhile, the Director of the Meteorological Centre Srinagar, Dr Mukhtar Ahmad said earlier today, “The water level in the lower and middle stretches of the Jhelum may rise until this evening due to continuous rainfall, after which it is expected to gradually recede. In the Jammu region, ongoing rains since last week have already caused rivers and streams to swell.” He added that the next 24 hours will be critical for the entire Jammu Kashmir region and that people living in low-lying areas should remain cautious and take safety measures.
