Continuous heavy rainfall in Jammu Kashmir has triggered landslides, waterlogging, and widespread damage to roads and bridges, with the state’s leadership promising inquiries into faulty infrastructure projects.
Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary, after inspecting a damaged bridge over the Tawi in Jammu, said substandard construction was to blame. “People have been cheated in the name of Smart City. Drains are choked and encroachment have been carried out in its name,” he told The Indian Express.
He added that all bridges and culverts along the national highway damaged during the floods would be reviewed.
The bridge, inaugurated by then Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in 2013, has been repeatedly damaged since. Its embankment and protection wall collapsed during floods in 2014 and again in 2016, and the structure suffered further damage this week.
Choudhary said several smaller bridges, culverts, and roads built under the PMGSY have also been washed away. “We will not allow substandard work here,” he said.
