Two senior leaders of the Janata Dal (United), Mohammed Qasim Ansari and Mohammed Nawaz Malik, have resigned from the party in protest against its support for the Waqf (Amendment) Bill.
In separate letters addressed to Bihar Chief Minister and JD(U) leader Nitish Kumar, the leaders expressed their disappointment, stating that the party’s endorsement of the bill has eroded the trust of the Muslim community, which once considered JD(U) a secular force.
The bill, passed in the Lok Sabha late on Wednesday, saw backing from JD(U), a key ally of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA). The party’s stance has triggered strong reactions, with critics arguing that the amendment undermines the rights and autonomy of Waqf properties.
The resignation of the two leaders adds to the growing dissent within JD(U), which has been attempting to balance its alliance commitments with its traditional voter base.
More resignations are expected in the coming days, not only from JD(U) but also from the Telangana-based Telangana Desam Party (TDP), as discontent over the bill spreads.
The bill is now set to face a test in the Rajya Sabha, where the NDA holds a numerical advantage.
