On the 9th death anniversary of Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, founder of the Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), a tribute event was held at Dara Shikoh Park in Bijbehara.
Party members and supporters gathered to honor the late leader’s contributions to Jammu Kashmir’s political landscape.
PDP President Mehbooba Mufti remembered her father as a visionary statesman who championed “peace with dignity” and devoted his life to the welfare of the people.
Reflecting on his tenure as Chief Minister from 2002 to 2005, she emphasized how he overcame challenges despite holding only 16 assembly seats.
His governance, she noted, focused on bridging the gap between Delhi and Kashmir, fostering dialogue, and implementing transformative policies for the region.
Mufti Mohammad Sayeed’s tenure is remembered for significant milestones, including the opening of the Srinagar-Muzaffarabad road for cross-border trade and family reunions, advancements in education, infrastructure, and agriculture, and the establishment of universities and colleges across Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh.
His initiatives also included the Prime Minister’s package for the return and rehabilitation of Kashmiri Pandits, which remains a landmark policy.
Addressing the gathering, Mehbooba Mufti contrasted her father’s leadership with the current administration.
“Mufti Sahab achieved so much with limited resources and seats. Today, despite a clear majority, the government has failed to address key issues such as rising unemployment, unjust employee terminations, and the traumatizing verification process,” she said.
She criticized the present administration’s policies, accusing it of dividing the youth of Jammu Kashmir along quota lines and neglecting open merit.
“Instead of fostering opportunities and unity, the government is pursuing policies that alienate our youth. It is imperative to safeguard the rights of marginalized communities while ensuring fair representation for all,” she remarked.
Mehbooba Mufti underscored her father’s belief in dialogue and inclusivity as essential to resolving the Kashmir issue, stating that his vision of “peace with dignity” continues to guide the PDP’s efforts for a just and united Jammu Kashmir.
The event was attended by senior PDP leaders and party supporters, who reaffirmed their commitment to upholding Mufti Mohammad Sayeed’s legacy and his vision for a progressive and peaceful Jammu and Kashmir.
