Tensions flared at Government Medical College (GMC) Anantnag in south Kashmir on Wednesday as the families of two deceased patients protested against alleged medical negligence by hospital staff.
The families accuse the hospital of inadequate care and monitoring, which they claim led to the untimely deaths of their loved ones.
One of the two was identified as Hajira begum, the wife of Abdul Sattar Bhat, a resident of Larkipora, Anantnag.
Her family said, “Instead of being maintained on an oxygen support system, the patient was moved to a general ward where she passed away.”
Soon after the deaths, the attendants and others at the hospital started protests against the medical negligence. The protest quickly escalated, with demonstrators clashing with doctors and paramedical staff.
The situation grew chaotic, prompting the local police to intervene to restore order and ensure safety.
In response to the unrest, GMC Principal Prof. Dr. Rukhsana Najeeb addressed the media, expressing her regret over the incident.
She assured that no doctor would be on strike and emphasized that patient care would not be compromised despite the turmoil.
An inquiry committee is to be established to investigate the allegations of negligence and ensure transparency.
