
23-year-old Owais Yaqoob who is from the Pulwama district bagged a gold medal in the 6th national Bangalore open MMA championship 2021 played at Forum Mall in Bangalore, Karnataka.
Owais won the gold medal in the under 75 Kg weight category.
In the competition, a total of 175 top fighters from various parts of India participated. In the quarterfinal, he won by Technical Knockout (TKO) against an opponent from Telangana. In the semis, he defeated his opponent from Haryana and in the final Owais won by walkover as his opponent from Maharashtra withdrew from the fight.
He achieved this feat last week. Owais started learning Thang-Ta and Karate skills at the age of 16 and after being inspired by Khabib Nurmagomedov, Owais started learning MMA.
Owais is a resident of the Murran area in South Kashmir’s Pulwama district and is currently pursuing his Bachelor of Arts degree from Government Degree College Pulwama.
He trains regularly for four to six hours and says that his aim is to win gold in the international MMA Championship
