The upper reaches in world famous ski resort of Gulmarg and other parts of the valley received fresh snow while intermittent rain continued for the second successive day in the pains, resulting in dip in the maximum and minimum temperatures.
However, as the day progressed, sun came out from behind the clouds late in the afternoon, bringing much needed relief from chilly weather conditions in the summer capital, Srinagar.
A Met department spokesperson that light to moderate rain and thundershowers would occur at most places in the valley during the next 24 hours under the influence of a Western Disturbance (WD), which is active in the region. “
Rain and thundershowers will continue during the subsequent four days from Wednesday in the valley,” he said, adding the weather will improve from April 22 onwards.
Heavy intermittent rain continued in Gulmarg, about 55 km from here in north Kashmir, since early Monday morning, resulting in dip in the night and day temperatures.
The night temperature in Gulmarg dipped over 3 degrees Celsius from Monday and settled at 1.5 degrees Celsius, which is about a degree below normal.
The weather was cloudy at world famous health resort of Pahalgam, about 100 from here in south Kashmir, since early this morning, resulting in further dip in the maximum temperature, which settled below normal.
The night temperature at the health resort also dipped and settled at 5.3 degrees C, against 6.3 degrees C recorded on Monday. The minimum temperature was still 2 degree above normal.
However, the upper reaches in Pahalgam, including Chandanwari, the last motorable halting station for Amarnath cave shrine on traditional yatra route, received light snowfall. Amarnath cave shine and its periphery besides Sheshnag, Mahagung, Pisso top and Panjterni also received fresh snowfall.
After witnessing wet and chilly weather since Monday morning in Srinagar, sun came out late in the afternoon, resulting in improvement in the day temperature though the ice cold winds continued.
The mercury at the summer capital also plunged 3 degree C from Monday and settled at 8.9 degree C, which is still a degree above normal. But, the day temperature dipped and settled 4 degree below normal on Monday in Srinagar.
The spokesperson said light rain and thundershowers would occur during the next 24 hours in Srinagar, where maximum and minimum temperatures will be around 19 degrees C and 9 degrees C, respectively.
Rain also lashed Qazigund, gateway to the valley, Kupwara in north Kashmir and tourist resort of Kukernag, resulting in dip in the maximum temperature. The mercury during the night at these places also plunged due to wet weather and settled at 8 degrees C, 5.8 degrees C and 7.5 degrees C, respectively.
Fresh snowfall was also witnessed at Pir-Ki-Gali and some other places on Mughal road, which remained closed for the second successive day on Tuesday.
