Jammu on Wednesday observed a complete shutdown on the call of The Chamber of Commerce against the Reliance stores that are going to be opened in Jammu.
The adjoining areas of Jammu city including Samba Observed a partial shutdown on the call of the Jammu traders.
“We will continue our protest until the decision of establishing Reliance stores is taken back. We have already suffered a lot due to COVID-19, we will deal with this, too. We can do anything to stop establishment of Reliance stores in Jammu Provence,” said the president of Shopkeepers, district Samba.
Speaking to The Kashmiriyat, the president said that the establishment of Reliance stores will lead to rise in unemployment, which can simultaneously lead to rise in crime rate in Jammu.
Apprehensive that the small businesses will have to shut their operations, he said, “People of Jammu stand together in their demand, we do not want the local businesses to shut. Abrogation of Article 370 has brought in no development, only promises. They promised development for the people of Jammu Kashmir, but it seems that are now trying to even snatch our livelihood from us.”
Asking the other businessmen to take part in the protest keeping their political belief aside. “It’s time to be united by keeping differences aside. We can’t compete with Reliance. We can’t afford to invest the amount they invest in their business. This is not the only source they have. They can earn their livelihood from other sources,” he said.
“Jammu region consists of all of us. Don’t let it down. It’s time to save our dignity and value of our land and youth,” he said.
The Kashmiriyat also talked to some other local businessmen, who said that they were ready to follow the instructions of Chamber of Commerce, even if they call for months of shutdown, adding, “like we did earlier, during the Bam Bam Bholay protest, when we were on strike for two months.”
As Jammu wore a deserted look, several protests were taken out in the city, public transport remained off the roads.
Another businessman, expressing his views, said that the Reliance stores would initially give huge discounts until other businessmen are fed up and close their business. The small-scale business owners will have to start grabbing loans. “Jio sims, if we remember started with a promise of free services and and later, it became one of the most expensive network services,” he said.
“People should be made aware that Reliance had provided the petrol pump in Punjab but they didn’t offer any discount,” he added.
The president of business hub district Samba said, “Next, we are going to take part in every meeting of Chamber of Commerce in order to take this a step ahead and will continue it and will follow the instructions of Chamber of Commerce.
