Mufti Abdul Gani Azhari, Kashmir’s veteran Islamic scholar passed away Thursday at the age of one hundred.
Locals told The Kashmiriyat that Mufti Abdul Gani, who was a resident of Kokernag’s Sagam area in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district was not keeping well for a long time and he breathed his last on Thursday morning.
He was the former head of the Arabic department at the University of Kashmir and was teaching at Dar ul Uloom Deoband post his retirement.
He was laid to rest in Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh.
Professor Azhari was a Sufi scholar and was taught by India’s first education minister Maulana Abul Kalam Azad.
A Ph.D. from Al Azar University in Egypt, e retired from KU in the year 1997.
