National Conference (NC) legislator Majeed Larmi on Monday hit back at party MP Aga Ruhullah Mehdi for criticizing Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, saying that if Ruhullah believes the Chief Minister has failed, he should resign from Parliament and contest fresh elections.
“If the Chief Minister has done nothing, as he says, then resign from the MP seat won on an NC ticket. Resign, contest again, and let the people decide,” Larmi told reporters in Srinagar.
Larmi said every elected leader has the right to speak for their constituency but questioned Ruhullah’s public criticism of the party leadership. “We made a promise for five years, not one. If he can speak publicly, we can respond too,” he said.
Clarifying governance issues, Larmi said that decisions like the installation of smart meters were taken under the Lieutenant Governor’s rule, not by the elected government. “The smart meter order came from the LG administration, not ours. If our government returns, we’ll send those meters to jail,” he said.
He added that major decisions were not possible until Jammu and Kashmir regained statehood. “Before the state returns, nothing significant can happen. When there’s no money or flour, who will make the bread?” he asked.
Larmi defended Omar Abdullah, saying he understood people’s hardships. “The CM said we are his soldiers. He will act when the time comes,” he said, adding that Ruhullah should have conveyed his grievances directly to the Chief Minister instead of going public.
“The government has a five-year term. It’s been just one year. When our term ends, people can decide whether to keep us or remove us,” Larmi said.
