Revamping power structure in Kashmir: Local contractors suffer in absence of ’dues’

The local contractors here have urged Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha to address their grievances, alleging that their dues are not being released on time, causing huge inconvenience to them as well as the labour class.

Talking to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), a group of contractors from Srinagar said that they are not getting the dues on time despite completing their works. “We are usually being told that the dues have not been released by the department, therefore, we are being asked to wait for a long time, due to which our families are suffering,” they said.

“The works are being completed on time, but whenever we ask for the pending dues, we are being forced to wait for months together,” they said, adding that local contractors to the labourers employed for the works are facing immense hardships due to the delay in releasing of the pending dues. “We faced huge inconveniences on Eid-ul-Fitr and now we hope issues will be resolved ahead of Eid-ul-Adha,” they said. “In six months, only one bill is being cleared with the result, the contractors aren’t able to clear the payments of labourers let alone feeding their families. We also face delays in getting materials, especially DT structures including wires, poles, meters, cables, and Transformers.”

Meanwhile, the contractors appealed the government, especially the Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha to look into the matter and ensure that the dues are released on time—(KNO)
