In a chilling incident that has once again exposed the rising tide of mob violence in India, a young Muslim man, Zakir Qureshi, was lynched to death by a mob in Chhapra, located in Bihar’s Saran district.
His brother, Nihal Qureshi, sustained severe injuries in the same attack and remains in critical condition.
The attack took place on May 11 in Kasai Toli, a locality in Chhapra, after a reportedly stolen animal was recovered. Alleging cattle theft, a mob of 50 to 60 people rounded up Zakir and Nihal, tied them with ropes, and assaulted them with iron rods, wooden planks, cricket bats, and sticks.
Videos from the scene show Zakir, battered and bloodied, pleading for mercy as he struggled to remain conscious.
Both victims were rushed to Patna Medical College and Hospital. Zakir succumbed to his injuries, while Nihal continues to battle for his life. Shocking photographs of Zakir’s bruised and disfigured body have since circulated online, sparking outrage and grief.
The brutal killing triggered protests in the Khanua area, where locals clashed with police in response to the lynching.
Based on Nihal’s statement, the police registered a case under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including 126(2), 115(2), 125(B), 109, 103(1), 352, 351(2), and 3(5).
According to Saran’s Senior Superintendent of Police, Dr. Kumar Ashish, two people—Pankaj Kumar and Mintu Rai—have been arrested, with more suspects, including Sujit Kumar, Prince Rai, and Pappu Rai, identified and being pursued.
Authorities have assured that those responsible for the lynching will be arrested and brought to justice.
