A deepfake video targeting Samajwadi Party MP Iqra Hasan recently went viral, sparking outrage and prompting a formal investigation.
The video, created using artificial intelligence, portrayed Hasan in an objectionable manner and was widely circulated on social media platforms.
It was later discovered that the clip had been manufactured and shared deliberately, not just for attention but with the intent to defame the young parliamentarian.
Deepfake technology uses artificial intelligence to superimpose someone’s face or voice onto another person’s body or speech, creating highly realistic but entirely fake content.
While the technology has some positive applications in filmmaking and education, it has increasingly been misused to target public figures, spread misinformation, and cause reputational damage.
In this case, the deepfake was uploaded from a fake Facebook account named “Iqra Hasan Chaudhary MP.” The account was traced back to two minors from Nuh district in Haryana.
According to reports, the boys had created the video as a way to increase their social media followers. However, the content and the impersonation of a sitting Member of Parliament made the act a serious offense.
The matter gained traction when a supporter of Hasan, Imran Nadvi, flagged the video on X (formerly Twitter) and tagged the Uttar Pradesh Police.
Acting on the complaint, the state DGP ordered an investigation, and the cyber cell of Shamli police was tasked with probing the incident. The investigation revealed the identities of the two minors responsible.
MP Iqra Hasan, on learning that the origin of the video was from Nuh, contacted local Congress leader Razia Bano for help.
A local inquiry led to the identification of the boys, both residents of Amka village in Ferozepur Jhirka.
A village meeting was held where the minors admitted to creating and posting the video. They apologized publicly and were scolded for their actions.
Despite the apology, Hasan indicated she would pursue legal action, underlining the seriousness of the offense.
