School closures, strike calls a history now: DGP Dilbagh Singh

Jammu and Kashmir’s Director General of Police (DGP) Dilbagh Singh said on Wednesday that the Rajouri and Poonch forests are close to the Line of Control (LoC) and the area has difficult terrain. The police are making efforts to track down the perpetrators of the recent attacks that left ten soldiers dead. DGP Singh also stated that the G-20 meeting in Srinagar was the outcome of the peaceful atmosphere prevailing in J&K since school closures and strikes were now history.

While speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a function in Jammu’s Ramban district, DGP Singh said that the police, along with the security forces, have killed many infiltrators who had crossed over from Rajouri and Poonch sectors. “It is not clear whether the group that carried out recent strikes leaving ten soldiers dead in Rajouri and Poonch is a fresh one or part of an old group. Efforts are on to track them down,” the DGP said, adding that “the forest areas of Rajouri and Poonch are close to LoC and have difficult terrain.”

“We will track the group and eliminate them soon,” he said. The DGP added that infiltrators have been coming from across the border to foment trouble. They come along with weapons and drug consignments, but many such modules have been busted, and many infiltrators have been killed in various operations,” he said.

The DGP said that efforts are being made from Pakistan to lure youth towards drugs that are being air-dropped through drones. “Police along with security forces are alert to foil all such bids,” he said, adding that even though many youth have fallen prey to drugs, the police are trying their best to keep them away from drugs so that they don’t tread the wrong path.

When asked about the upcoming G20 event in Srinagar, the J&K police chief said that the event was the outcome of the peaceful atmosphere prevailing in the entire Union Territory. “A Smart City is being developed, and massive development is taking place. The closure of schools, street protests, strike calls, and business losses are now history. The G20 is an opportunity to promote J&K’s tourism potential at the international level and to give the tourism industry a global push amid a peaceful atmosphere,” the DGP said. (KNO)
