Seven drug peddlers arrested across Kashmir, Police recover narcotics

Another wave of anti-narcotics operations was carried out across Kashmir this week, resulting in the arrest of seven individuals, including a woman, and the recovery of a sizeable amount of illegal substances.

In one of the incidents, police in Narbal, Budgam, raided a local bakery shop at Narbal Chowk, allegedly being used to conceal drugs. Assisted by a magistrate and local witnesses, the officers recovered around 124 grams of charas from the premises. Two individuals, both residents of Sultanpora Kandi in Baramulla, were taken into custody.

In a separate operation in Baramulla’s Kreeri area, police intercepted a private car at a routine checkpoint. A search of the vehicle led to the discovery of narcotic tablets and packets of charas. The individuals in the vehicle, including a man from Wani Mohalla and a woman from Peer Mohalla, were immediately arrested. The vehicle has since been impounded.

Meanwhile, a checkpoint at National Highway Tapper near Palhallan led to the seizure of approximately 250 grams of poppy straw from a truck. The driver, a man hailing from Rohama, was detained and booked under applicable sections of the law.

In south Kashmir’s Awantipora, two youth were intercepted by a patrolling police party at Padgampora Crossing. According to police sources, both confessed to drug use and were taken to a local rehabilitation centre in Tral. Subsequent medical tests confirmed their drug intake.

All arrested persons are now facing charges under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, and police say investigations are ongoing in each case.

A senior officer from Kashmir Police said these arrests are part of a broader crackdown aimed at curbing the flow of illegal drugs in the Valley. “We encourage citizens to report suspicious activity. Narcotics have no place in our communities, and we are committed to fighting this menace,” the officer said.

Authorities have appealed to residents to be vigilant and report any drug-related activities to nearby police stations or via emergency helpline 112.

This coordinated effort by law enforcement is the latest in a growing list of anti-drug operations across the Valley, as the administration continues to grapple with the rising threat of substance abuse.
