The Delimitation Commission has met all the delegations on the last day of their four-day visit. Chief Election Commissioner Sushil Chandra, who was accompanying the commission on the last day of the tour, said that after the delimitation determination, 7 assembly seats will increase in the state. Chandra also said that the draft of the commission will be placed among the public and objections will also be sought on it.
Till the last elections, there were a total of 87 assembly seats in Jammu and Kashmir. After the separate union territory of Ladakh, a total of 83 seats were left in the state and 4 were given parts of Ladakh. Now after the new delimitation, there will be 90 assembly seats in the state, on which elections will be held.
Delimitation not done after 1981.
On the questions being raised on the process of delimitation, the Election Commissioner also said that the delimitation on the basis of which elections have been held so far was based on the 1981 census. The commission, set up in 1981, could submit its new recommendations after a gap of 14 years. But this did not happen and after 1981 no delimitation work was done here. Sushil Chandra also said that the determination of delimitation is a big process and it will now be done on the basis of the 2011 census.
Commission members will again visit Jammu and Kashmir
The Election Commissioner also said that the delegations meeting him have given various suggestions. Some have even demanded reservations. After listening to the views of all these, changes can be made in the draft as much as possible. Apart from this, it is also important to keep in mind the geographical conditions of Jammu and Kashmir. Representations from all districts have attended and we have also held meetings with administrative officers.
Chairperson of the Commission Justice Ranjana Desai said that in the last three days, talks have been held with all political parties and members of other delegations in Jammu and Kashmir in a positive atmosphere. He said that the demands of all have been heard and in the coming time again the members of the delegation will come here.
