Severe weather alert issued for Jammu Kashmir over next 48 hours

A severe weather alert has been issued for the Jammu region over the next 48 hours, with Tuesday expected to bring the most intense conditions.

Today, light to moderate rain is likely in parts of Jammu, particularly in Kathua, Samba, Doda, and Kishtwar districts, while Kashmir will remain mostly dry except for scattered showers in the afternoon or evening, as per Kashmir Weather.

On Tuesday, the situation is forecast to turn severe across several parts of Jammu as heavy to extremely heavy rainfall is expected. “This may cause streams and rivers to rise above the flood alarm level, with Poonch likely to be the least affected district,” Kashmir Weather forecasted.

In South Kashmir, particularly in the higher reaches, heavy to very heavy rainfall is anticipated. The Pir Panjal mountains are expected to receive intense precipitation, which could trigger flash floods and swell downstream rivers and streams. Snowfall over the higher reaches of the Pir Panjal range is also a possibility.

Central Kashmir may receive only light to moderate showers, while north Kashmir is expected to remain comparatively unaffected.

The report urged people to strictly avoid trekking or venturing into the mountains of Jammu and south Kashmir until Wednesday.

“Heavy rainfall may lead to flash floods, shooting stones, and landslides, disrupting travel across mountain passes on Tuesday. Residents in low-lying and flood-prone areas have also been advised to remain cautious as overflowing rivers and streams pose a significant risk,” the forecast by  Kashmir Weather concluded.
