India has extended support to Sheikh Hasina, the former Prime Minister of Bangladesh, as she seeks refuge following her abrupt departure from Dhaka. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar informed an all-party meeting on Tuesday that Hasina, who arrived in Ghaziabad, is currently in a state of shock.
The Indian government is allowing her time to recover before discussing various issues, including her future plans.
During the meeting, attended by leaders including Rahul Gandhi, Jaishankar stated that New Delhi has been in contact with Bangladesh’s army chief to ensure the safety of over 10,000 Indian students currently in Bangladesh.
He also addressed concerns raised by Gandhi regarding potential foreign involvement in the unrest, noting that the government is closely monitoring the situation.
Jaishankar later shared on X that all political parties extended their support to the government in managing the crisis. He expressed appreciation for the unanimous support and understanding from the parties.
The meeting was also attended by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah, Health Minister J.P. Nadda, and other notable leaders.
Sheikh Hasina, who fled Dhaka amid violent protests over a controversial job quota system, landed at Hindon airport in Ghaziabad on Monday. The ongoing clashes have resulted in over 300 deaths.
The military plane that transported her back to India is expected to return to Bangladesh without her, as she plans to seek political asylum in the United Kingdom.
