Shia body decides to boycott admin’s meetings on Muharram

The All Jammu and Kashmir Shia Association, under the leadership of Molvi Imran Reza Ansari, has decided to boycott all government meetings related to the upcoming Muharram observances.

Molvi Imran Reza Ansari, a former minister, criticized the timing of the Lieutenant Governor’s recent high-level meeting on Muharram preparations, stating on social media: “With just six days left before Muharram, the LG suddenly holds a meeting to facilitate the event. It seems like he believes he can arrange everything instantly. Janab LG Sb, please focus on SANJY, we can handle Muharram 2024 ourselves.”

Abid Ansari, General Secretary of the All JK Shia Association, confirmed the association’s decision to abstain from any Muharram or Safar-related meetings with the administration.

During a press conference at Darul Jawad in Qamarwari, Ansari explained that the decision was made after years of unaddressed complaints and inadequate responses from various government departments, which cited lack of funds, staff, and resources.

The association pointed out numerous issues, including insufficient medical support, inadequate medicine supplies, particularly for children, and a lack of staff for first aid services. Abid also noted the insufficient ration supply of essentials like rice and sugar for religious observances during Muharram and Safar. Additionally, poor road maintenance by SMC and R&B has caused injuries and difficulties for mourners.

The police department’s inadequate security measures, traffic management issues, and restrictions on peaceful processions during Muharram and Safar have further aggravated the situation. Frequent power outages during religious gatherings, along with inadequate support from LAWDA, PHE, and the Fire Service departments, are also significant concerns.

Despite repeated requests, the association’s calls for appointing a Nodal Officer in each district to address Muharram and Safar-related issues have been ignored. Ansari emphasized that the community has suffered for far too long due to the administration’s “negligence” and stated that since the LG administration took over, the situation has only worsened.

The association is demanding improved services and support from the JK administration, including allocated funds specifically for Muharram and Safar. They urge the administration to address their grievances to ensure the smooth conduct of the Muharram and Safar observances.
