Shia Cleric Detained Ahead of Muharram Procession in Kashmir

A prominent Muslim cleric from the Nowlar area of Pattan in the Baramulla district has been allegedly detained in Kashmir valley on Tuesday ahead of the annual Muharram procession on the 10th day of the first month of the Hijri calendar.

Speaking to The Kashmiriyat, one of his relatives said, “Moulana Manzoor has been detained to prevent him from addressing and leading any Muharram processions. We do not know of any reasons other than that.”

On Tuesday, a few Policemen reached his house in the Pattan area and asked him to present himself in the local Police Station. The relative said that Moulana Manzoor reached a local police station around 9 AM on Wednesday. “When he did not return, the family got worried and approached the Police station, where they were told that Moulana Manzoor had been detained,” he told The Kashmiriyat.

Maulana Manzoor is the symbol of resistance and unity, his detention is collective defeat to his enemies, locals told The Kashmiriyat.

A local speaking to The Kashmiriyat mourner from the area told The Kashmiriyat that he is the symbol of resistance. And his detention will definitely hurt the sentiments of Shia mourners of the area.

The Kashmiriyat tried to contact concerned police officials, regarding the incident, their numbers were out of reach. “Come to the Police Station and we will provide you with the details. I cannot share any details over the phone,” a senior official from Pattan said.
