Shutdown in Downtown Srinagar, Pulwama After Killing of Local Militants

On Thursday, a complete shutdown is being observed in the downtown area of Srinagar and in Pulwama township of south Kashmir against the killing of a local Militant, Mehran Shalla in an encounter in the Rambagh area of Srinagar on Wednesday evening.

Locals told The Kashmiriyat that shops and other business establishments are shut, while traffic is majorly off the roads in the Srinagar’s downtown area.

Protests had erupted in the Rambagh area of Srinagar after the killing of three Militants. The police said that the three were traveling in a car when they were asked to stop, however, they opened fire on the forces. In the retaliatory fire, all of them were killed. Among the slain was Mehran, an associate of TRF Militant outfit, who was a resident of Jamalat area of Srinagar.

Late-night protests had erupted in the area, after which the internet was shut in the area as a preventive measure.

The Local women who claimed to be eyewitnesses of the incident had said that the three were unarmed. “They were taken out of the car and shot dead,” the protesting women said on Wednesday, a claim denied by Jammu Kashmir Police.

On Thursday, the Former Chief Minister of Jammu Kashmir and PDP president, Mehbooba Mufti tweeted, “After yesterday’s alleged encounter at Rambagh legitimate doubts are looming over its authenticity. As per reports & witnesses it seems that the firing was one sided.Again the official version far from truth is not in line with ground realities as seen in Shopian, HMT & Hyderpora.”

Meanwhile the Pulwama township of South Kashmir is also observing a shutdown against the killing of two militants from the Pulwama in the encounter at Rambagh.

The two were identified as Manzoor Ahmad Mir resident of Babhar Pulwama and Arafat Ahmad Sheikh resident of Nikloora Pulwama, as per the Police statement.
