Slain Police official’s family wants dead body of his son back for burial at ancestral graveyard: Report

The family of the assistant Sub-inspector Mushtaq Ahmad Lone who was killed in an attack in Srinagar’s Lal Baazar area demanded the dead body of the slain son of Mushtaq Ahmed be handed over to the family, the Times of India reported.

According to the report, the family members and hundreds of others gathered at the house of the slain cop demanded that the body of his son named Aqib Mushtaq be handed over to the legal heirs for burial in the family’s ancestral graveyard in south Kashmir’s Kulgam.

ASI Lone was killed in a militant attack on a police check post in Srinagar on Tuesday. His son Aquib Mushtaq Lone, a graduate in engineering, was shot dead by government forces in Kulgam district in April 2020.

Police said Aquib was a militant associate and his body was found at the site of the shootout, though three Hizbul Mujahideen members who were said to be with him escaped. He was buried in Baramulla in north Kashmir.

Aaqib’s family has dismissed the Police claims that Aquib was associated with the militants. ASI Lone and his family had demanded that Aquib’s body be given to them, but their request has been turned down repeatedly, according to the TOI report.

After the police officer’s death Tuesday, the family renewed its demand.

Meanwhile, several Police officials including DIG Abdul Jabbar and Kulgam SSP GV Sundeep Chakravarthy visited ASI Lone’s home and met the bereaved family.
