Son seen assaulting elderly parents in viral video, Srinagar police initiate action

Police in Srinagar have registered a case against an individual after a video showing him assaulting his elderly parents went viral on social media, drawing widespread condemnation.

The incident occurred in the Nowgam area of central Kashmir, with the police responding swiftly to the public outrage.

The police, acting on a written complaint filed by the accused’s mother, Taja Banoo, wife of Gh Ahmad Wani, have registered FIR No. 77/2024 under sections 74, 126(2), and 351(2) BNS at the Nowgam Police Station. An investigation has been initiated to address the serious allegations.

The viral video, which surfaced on social media, shows the son physically attacking his parents in broad day light.

Holding a chappal (slippers) in his hand, the man is seen initially attacking his father and then he beats his mother too, who both fall down on the ground, despite which the man continues assaulting the duo.

This incident comes just two days after a similar case from Ganderbal. In this case, an elderly father, abandoned by his three sons and five daughters, was forced to live in an old age home in central Kashmir.

This recent string of incidents has raised concerns about the treatment of the elderly in Kashmir, as calls for stronger legal action grow louder.
