A language dispute erupted in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly on Thursday when Speaker directed National Conference MLA Altaf Ahmad Wani to speak in Urdu instead of Kashmiri.
While raising a supplementary question regarding the establishment of a hotel management institute in Pahalgam, Wani began speaking in Kashmiri. However, the Speaker interrupted, stating that reporters faced difficulties in understanding the language and asked him to switch to Urdu.
In response, Wani questioned the directive, pointing to Jammu-based legislators who speak in Dogri. “Sir, when they can speak in Dogri, why can’t I?” he asked.
Despite Wani’s objection, the Speaker moved on to the next question without addressing his concern, leaving the issue unresolved.
