After remaining closed for near about four months, Srinagar-Leh highway was thrown open for vehicular traffic today.
A miss communication between District administration Ganderbal and Border Roads organization. (BRO) took place on Friday over opening of the Srinagar-Leh highway.
BRO officials said Srinagar-Leh highway has been opened for vehicular traffic today, however Deputy Commissioner Ganderbal Piyush Singla said order in this regard was not issued by Div Com Kashmir.
District administration Ganderbal decided to initiate “criminal negligence proceedings” against Beacon authorities.
In a statement issued by District Magistrate Ganderbal it has decided to “initiate criminal negligence proceedings against Beacon authorities for unilaterally deciding to open Srinagar Leh highway and putting the life and property of people in danger besides creating confusion considering law and order situation prevailing in the areas.”
It is pertinent to mention that District Administration Ganderbal has been trying hard since long in getting the highway open at the earliest.
Sonamarg resort has already been opened early in March to facilitate tourism.
Speaking on the issue District Magistrate told that“There is a procedure to everything.”
“We are more eager to open the highway at the earliest. Highway is closed and opened only by the order of Div Com Kashmir on the recommendation of our office.

Earlier, the Army announced that it opened the Srinagar-Leh Highway for vehicular traffic. However, the district administration, Ganderbal said that the highway was yet to be opened “officially”.
The highway was closed for vehicular traffic in January this year following heavy snowfall along Zojila pass .
