Statehood our right, not a favour: Farooq Abdullah

National Conference President Dr. Farooq Abdullah on Friday reiterated his party’s demand for the immediate restoration of Jammu Kashmir’s statehood, calling it a constitutional right rather than a concession.

Speaking to reporters during a condolence visit to the Aga family residence in Budgam, Dr. Abdullah said, “Statehood is our right, not a favour.”

He emphasized that the people of Jammu Kashmir have been stripped of their democratic and constitutional rights for far too long.

“Restoring statehood is not only a political necessity but a moral obligation,” he added. “The dignity and autonomy of this region must be upheld.”

Dr. Abdullah’s remarks come amid growing political calls for the return of democratic processes in Jammu Kashmir, which was downgraded to a Union Territory in August 2019 following the abrogation of Article 370.
