Arif Alvi of PTI Defeats MMA, PPP to Become 13th President of Pakistan

September 04 Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf's (PTI) Dr Arifur Rehman Alvi has been elected the 13th President of Pakistan, according to provisional results. The counting of the votes has finished and the tabulation of the results is under way. The Election Commission of Pakistan is scheduled to announce official results tomorrow. However, provisional results have already been announced. Alvi, according to unofficial results, has edged out PML-N backed chief of the Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA), Fazlur Rehman and senior PPP leader Aitzaz Ahsan in the presidential race by garnering the most number of votes in five of the six leading parliamentary bodies in the country.

August 17 Pakistani lawmakers have voted for Imran Khan as the new prime minister of Pakistan on Friday. A simple majority in the vote, due to take place in the lower house of parliament on Friday afternoon, brought Khan to power ahead of a swearing-in ceremony set for Saturday. Khan won the July 25 election, but did not have enough seats for an outright majority, forcing him to partner with smaller parties and independents in order to form a government. His only challenger is Shahbaz Sharif, leader of the ousted Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), who had called the elections rigged, but reached the Assembly today to prove his majority, but only lost despite having support of MMA.
