A day after the tragic death of a 30-year-old pregnant woman at the District Hospital Kulgam, the Directorate of Health Services Kashmir has constituted an official inquiry committee to probe the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Earlier on Tuesday, The Kashmiriyat reported that,
Nancy, also known as Nayeema, wife of Showkat Ahmad Bhat and a resident of Srandoo Kulgam, died during childbirth at the district hospital on Tuesday, sparking outrage and allegations of medical negligence from her family.
According to relatives, she was admitted for delivery but was not given timely or adequate care. “We kept pleading for help, but no one listened. By the time they responded, it was too late,” said a grieving family member. They have called on Jammu and Kashmir Health Minister Sakina Masood to personally intervene, demanding justice and accountability.
In response to the allegations, the Medical Superintendent of the hospital said a committee would be formed to look into the matter. That has now been formalized.
The Health Department on Tuesday issued an official order sanctioning an inquiry into the death. The committee, headed by Dr. Khalid Parvaiz (I/C CMO Anantnag), includes three senior doctors from across the Valley: Dr. Shahid Tak, Consultant Cardiology (JLNM Hospital Srinagar); Dr. Manzoor A. Rather, Consultant Anesthesia (DH Ganderbal); and Dr. Muzaffar Ali Khan, Consultant Surgeon (District Hospital Budgam).
The committee has been asked to submit its report by the. evening of June 19.
The incident has renewed public concern about the quality of care in government hospitals. Local residents, expressing both sorrow and anger, have called for immediate improvements in medical infrastructure and staff accountability.
As of now, Nancy’s family awaits answers—and justice.
