Those ‘misrepresenting’ Muslims, labelling them terrorists to face imprisonment: Vladimir Putin

Russian President Vladimir Putin greeted the participants and guests of the 2022 Kazan Global Youth Summit as it opened in Kazan on Monday.

In his address, the Russian leader said, “Islamic states have been our traditional partners in addressing many topical issues on the regional and global agenda, in attempts to build a more just and democratic world order. It is significant that young people are getting more actively involved in this constructive and comprehensive cooperation.”

The Kazan Global Youth Summit is intended to keep young Muslims educated and to foster connections with people from other regions and cultures.

Russia has the largest Muslim population in Europe, with 14 million Muslims constituting nearly 10% of the total population. Islam is a part of Russian historical heritage and is subsidized by the Russian government. It is recognised under the law and by Russian political leaders as one of Russia’s traditional religions.

Islam’s status as a major Russian religion, alongside Orthodox Christianity, dates back to Catherine the Great, who supported Islamic clerics and scholarship.

Meanwhile, as per reports, the Russian president has banned the “misrepresentation” of Muslims in the official media and called for a stoppage of Muslims being labeled as terrorists in movies and series. “Those who portray Muslims as terrorists shall be punished with imprisonment,” the Russian president said, as per the report.
