Three Cops Including SPO from South Kashmir Killed in 2018 Encounter Awarded Shaurya Chakra

A Special Police Officer (SPO) Ashiq Hussain Malik who was killed during an Anti-Militancy operation in 2018 has been conferred with Shaurya Chakra- an Indian military decoration awarded for valour, courageous action or self-sacrifice while not engaged in direct action with the enemy.

The president of India, Ram Nath Kovind presented the award to the family of the slain cop, Ashiq Hussain who hailed from South Kashmir.

SPO Aashiq Hussain Malik, a resident of the Chittergul area in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district was killed during an encounter with militants in the Sirigufwara area of Bijbehara in Anantnag on June 22, 2018.

The Ministry of Defence informed that the President also conferred 13 Param Vishisht Seva Medals, two Uttam Yudh Seva Medals, and 24 Ati Vishisht Seva Medals for distinguished service of an exceptional order.

President Kovind presents Shaurya Chakra to Shri Ashiq Hussain Malik (Posthumous), Special Police Official, Jammu & Kashmir. He displayed exceptional & conspicuous bravery, raw courage, and commitment to duty in fighting with terrorists and made supreme sacrifice for the nation.

The second cop who was presented the Shaurya Chakra was Imran Tak who was killed during an encounter with militants on November 17, 2017 in Srinagar.

The third police cop, Head Constable Subash Chander, was conferred by Shaurya Chakra by the President.

According to the Police, Chander, was deployed at a joint checkpoint in Kralhar, Baramulla district during Urban Local Bodies elections.

“During checking, an SUV was stopped and the passengers asked to prove their identity. One of men in the vehicle took out an AK-47 rifle and fired on Chander, who by then had taken a defensive position. There were eight others in the vehicle, making it difficult for the policeman to engage the militant,” the police stated.
