Three Days After the Release of His Young Brother, Tariq Khan Killed in Encounter

Three days after the release of his youngest brother, Abid Khan post facing months of detention, Tariq Ahmed Khan, a Lashkar e Taiba commander was killed during an encounter at Anantnag District in South Kashmir early on Monday morning.

Tariq was the son of Nazir Ahmed Khan, a staunch disciple of political struggle has spent more than 12 years in various jails, in Kashmir and outside Kashmir. He has played a pivotal role in shaping up many Political amalgams including People’s League and Geelani’s Hurriyat, but left both.

His elder son, Waheed Ahmed Khan is the General Secretary of Ummat e Islami led by the Qazi Ahmed Yasir.

Tariq had joined the Militant outfit Lahskar e Taiba in 2018, July, when two Militant were killed inside his house at Lal Chowk area in Islamabad (Anantnag) during an encounter.

His mother during a conversation with The Kashmiriyat said, “Whenever an encounter would rage anywhere in Kashmir, my heart will be uneasy, it always got apprehensive that Tariq might be among the Killed Militants.”

Early morning on Monday, the Forces including 19 RR raided a cluster of houses at Khulchohar in Ranipora area of the South Kashmir’s islamabad (Anantnag) district, after a few hours, three Militants were killed, later they were identified as Tariq Ahmed Khan of Lal Chowk Anantnag, Nadeem Ahmed from Kulgam and Masood of Chenab valley’s Doda district.

As soon as the news spread, strict restrictions were imposed in the township, barbered wires restricting the movement of Public were placed on several lanes and streets, Internet services were also snapped in Anantnag and Kulgam.

Tariq wanted to see his sister married, his brother said, “but unfortunate is it that neither he, nor our younger brother was here, i was released a day before her wedding in September during last year’s curfew post abrogation of special status.”

Dozens of people despite restrictions have gathered at the house of Tariq Khan to express solidarity with the family, however, Tariq’s ‘Limited Family members’ were allowed to accompany the officials for a ‘secret burial’ somewhere in North Kashmir.
