Thundershowers, rain predicted across Kashmir over next six hours

Following a prolonged dry spell and intense heatwave, fresh rainfall was recorded in parts of north Kashmir and Srinagar on Monday afternoon, offering some respite from soaring temperatures.

According to a 4:45 p.m. weather update by Kashmir Weather, cloud clusters have developed across several areas of Jammu and Kashmir in the past two hours.

Thundershowers are expected in many parts over the next six hours, with brief heavy showers possible.

The forecast also warns that flash floods cannot be ruled out in a few vulnerable spots.

While the sudden spell has cooled temperatures and raised hopes among residents, the agricultural sector continues to reel under the effects of the heatwave.

In the Nishat area of Srinagar, paddy fields are showing visible cracks due to weeks without irrigation. Farmers are growing increasingly anxious, with concerns that the rainfall has arrived too late to prevent serious crop loss.

“This rain is welcome, but it’s just a drop in the ocean,” said Ghulam Nabi Dar, a 62-year-old farmer from Nishat. “We haven’t had proper water for weeks. Our fields have cracked open, and if this continues, we may not get any yield this year.”

The recent rain may provide short-term relief, but agricultural experts stress the urgent need for consistent water supply and proper irrigation to save the season’s paddy crop.

So far, the authorities have not announced any emergency irrigation measures.
