Tripura: Mosques Vandalised, Muslim-Owned Shops Set On Fire During VHP Rally

In yet another incident of communal violence against Muslims in India, during a Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) rally against the recent desecration of Durga Puja pandals in Bangladesh, a mosque and a few shops were vandalized and two shops were also set ablaze on Tuesday evening, at Panisagar sub-division in North Tripura.

As per reports, a VHP protest rally of around 3,500 people was organised in Panisagar. Some of the activists in the rally ravaged a mosque in the Chamtilla area of Tripura. Also in the Rowa Bazar area, three shops and three houses were ransacked. During the rally two shops were also set on fire by the participants. All the ransacked houses and shops belong to the Muslim minority community.

One of the victims of this assault has registered an FIR in this regard at the concerned police station.

Disturbing visuals which surfaced on social media shows a mob of Hindutva goons chanting the slogans, “Tripura me Mulla geeri nahi chalega nahi chalega” and “Oh Mohammad tera baap, Hare Krishna Hare Ram (O Muhammad who is your father- Lord Krishna Lord Krishna)”

The visuals also depict two shops set ablaze by violent protestors. Violent right-wing mobs wearing saffron clothes, carrying swords, and raising anti-Muslim genocidal slogans were seen in photos and videos marching with weapons towards the mosque.

Bajrang Dal leader from Panisagar, Narayan Das, who was part of this rally alleged that some of the people standing near the mosque hurled abuses at the participants of the rally. He also alleged that they were chanting the slogan ‘Pakistan Zindabad’ and were also armed with weapons. He also claimed that these incidents provoked the protesters which led to this violence.

The officials have deployed heavy security in the area to maintain law and order in the area and to keep the situation under control. The Tripura police have provided security cover to almost all the mosques in the state after this incident of violence.

It is pertinent to mention that last week the Tripura State Jamiat Ulama (Hind) had alleged that after the violence in Bangladesh, some mosques and minority habitations in parts of the state came under attack mostly in parts of the West, North, and Gomati districts of Tripura.
