Two more separatist organizations, Tehreek-i-Istiqlal (JKTI) and Jammu and Kashmir Freedom Movement (JKFM), have severed ties with the Hurriyat Conference and renounced separatism.
JKTI, led by Ghulam Nabi Sofi, formally distanced itself from the Hurriyat, with Sofi declaring, “I have long before severed my ties with separatist ideology and today I officially denounce it. I am a true and committed citizen of India and believe in the Indian Constitution.”
Similarly, JKFM chairman Muhammad Sharief Sartaj also announced his complete disassociation from the Hurriyat and other separatist groups, emphasizing his commitment to India’s national integrity and declaring his organization dissolved.
Their decision follows a similar move by two other Hurriyat-affiliated groups, the Jammu and Kashmir People’s Movement (JKPM) and the Democratic Political Movement (DPM), which had earlier abandoned separatism. JKPM chairman Shahid Saleem made it clear that neither he nor his organization had any sympathy for the Hurriyat, arguing that it had failed to address the people’s legitimate concerns.
Advocate Mohammad Shafi Reshi of DPM also distanced himself from the Geelani-led Hurriyat faction, citing the group’s inability to meet public expectations.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah hailed these developments as a sign that “separatism has become history in Kashmir.”
He attributed this shift to the Modi government’s firm policies and emphasis on national unity. Shah described these moves as a major victory for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a developed and peaceful Bharat, urging other separatist-leaning groups to follow suit.
These resignations come against the backdrop of the Union Home Ministry’s recent ban on two organizations—the Awami Action Committee (AAC) and Jammu and Kashmir Ittihadul Muslimeen (JKIM)—for their alleged involvement in anti-national activities.
The government’s stringent approach to separatism and its push for integration have played a crucial role in persuading these groups to align with the constitutional framework of India.
