On Tuesday, Uber commenced its operations in Jammu Kashmir, making Srinagar its first city of service.
The ride-hailing giant introduced both UberGo and Uber Intercity services in the valley.
Uber Intercity rides are now available for destinations like Gulmarg, Sonmarg, and Pahalgam, providing more options for users to explore beyond Srinagar.
In a press statement, Uber stated, “The launch of our service will create meaningful earning opportunities for drivers and will support the economic growth of local communities.”
With the introduction of Uber Intercity, users can now book rides for return journeys lasting up to five days, providing flexibility and convenience, Uber said.
Highlighting the user benefits, Uber mentioned that all rides, including Intercity trips, can be booked up to 90 days in advance.
This feature allows riders to plan and schedule their trips well in advance, offering predictability for both riders and drivers.
Shiva Shailendran, Head of Supply and Regional Operations at Uber, expressed excitement about the launch, stating, “The launch of our operations in Srinagar marks our presence in the popular tourism hub of Jammu Kashmir, and we are excited to serve the riders in one of India’s all-time favourite travel destinations. With the global ride-hailing app now available in Srinagar, tourists as well as locals will now find a trusted ride in and around Srinagar with a few taps on the app.”
The introduction of Uber has been opposed by the local transporters, as they have been undergoing huge losses post the abrogation of Article 370.
Several taxi stands have been relocated and new laws imposed, which transporters say, have caused massive burden on the sector.
“Uber and Ola provide some part of the total fare to the drivers, while the drivers have to pay for oil and other services needed for the taxi from the limited share of the fair they receive. This is basically exploitation of labour,” a transport association spokesperson told The Kashmiriyat.
