Unemployment rate for persons of age 15 years and above in urban areas dropped to 12.6 per cent in April-June 2021 from 20.8 per cent in the same month of the previous year, showed a periodic labour force survey by the National Statistical Office (NSO).
The Government of India’s Ministry of Statistics and Programme implementation in its latest Periodic Labour Force Survey stated that unemployment figures among educated youth in Jammu Kashmir have reached a staggering 46.3 per cent.
The report “Periodic Labour Force Survey April-June 2021” released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation states that Jammu Kashmir’s urban unemployment rate for the age group 15-29 age has reached 46.3 per cent from the 44.1 per cent in comparison to the previous quarter.
According to the report, The urban unemployment rate in Jammu Kashmir for persons aged 15 and above was 17.6 per cent in April-June 2021, the same as the previous quarter. (January to march)
The report also stated that unemployment was highest among women ( age group 15-29) compared to men at 67.3 per cent in April-June 2021.
According to PLFS statistics from 2019, young unemployment in J&K has increased after the Covid epidemic. The unemployment rate among young people aged 15 to 29 years was 33.8 per cent, which was lower than in the first quarter of 2022.
According to the stats of PLFS, during the first wave of the pandemic, the global young unemployment rate reached 34.7 per cent in the April-June quarter of 2020.
The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation polled 1,390 families in the state, including 1539 people aged 15 to 29.
NSO launched PLFS in April 2017. On the basis of PLFS, a quarterly bulletin is brought out giving estimates of labour force indicators namely UR, Worker Population Ratio (WPR), Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR), distribution of workers by broad broad status in employment and industry of work in Current Weekly Status (CWS).
