Untimely Snowfall Adds to the Woes of Kashmir

The early snowfall on Saturday has caused a massive damaged to orchardists in South Kashmir areas.

Locals from the area told The Kashmiriyat that around 3 feet to 1 feet of snowfall was received in the South Kashmir region, with Sangerwani area of South Kashmir’s Pulwama District and adjoining hilly villages receiving at least one feet of snowfall.

“Snowfall ahead leaf fall has caused huge damages in their orchards, Snow slashed away branches from trunks of the apple trees while some trees were even uprooted,” a Local from Sangerwani told The Kashmiriyat.

In Sangerwani and the adjoining area of Aditrag and Anderwali more than 150 kanal of land are under apple cultivation and the people are heavily dependent on Apple farming for their livelihood, Similar damage was reported from Abahama and adjoining areas.

In Shopian District massive damage was caused by the untimely snowfall to the apple crop at Sedow, Heerpora, Sedow and Bohrihalan areas of this south Kashmir district.

The snowfall has also affected apple crop at some places in these area where it was yet to be harvested.

In many Islamabad (Anantnag) villages including Rampora, K. Kalan, Kehribal and Akingam orchardists said, “The snowfall has caused at least 50 percent damage to crops here in this South Kashmir District.”

The damage to the apple crop has caused deep sorrow among affected orchardists who demanded that the damages compensated by the Government.
