‘Unverified news can risk soldiers’ lives’: Defence Ministry issues guidelines for media

The Defence Ministry has raised alarm over some media outlets sharing fake or unverified news, saying it could put soldiers’ lives at risk during counter-insurgency operations in Jammu Kashmir.

In a statement today, the ministry reminded news organisations about an earlier advisory from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (dated April 26, 2025), which clearly asked the media not to show live updates or use unofficial sources during military actions.

Officials said that false reports, often shared as “breaking news,” can accidentally help the enemy and cause confusion during sensitive operations, affecting national security.

The advisory clearly says that sharing real-time updates or source-based reports about military movements is not allowed. The ministry urged the media to act responsibly and follow the rules, especially while reporting in conflict areas like Jammu Kashmir.

It also asked editors to be extra careful and make sure no content spreads misinformation or harms security efforts.
