UP: Maulvi arrested in for pro-Palestine social media post

Several days after Yogi Adityanath cautioned against any actions opposing the central government’s stance on the Israel-Palestine conflict, a social media post seemingly supporting Palestine has triggered tensions.

A 23-year-old Maulvi named Sohail Ansari was arrested in Hamirpur for allegedly exaggerating the matter.

He, along with another Maulvi named Atif Chaudhary, was charged under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections 153A, which relates to fostering hostility between groups, and 505(2), which deals with inciting enmity, hatred, or ill will between classes.

Chaudhary is currently evading arrest, and a case has been filed against him.

Simultaneously, a separate case was registered against a doctor in Bareilly for making offensive remarks about Muslims on WhatsApp in connection with the Israel-Palestine conflict.

The doctor, identified as Dr. Parminder Maheshwari, working at a private hospital in Bareilly, has not been apprehended as of now.

A senior Hamirpur police officer stated, “We have arrested Ansari, and efforts are underway to locate other suspects.”

The police have alleged that Maulvi Sohail Ansari posted pro-Palestine content on social media and made remarks to the media that are prohibited and could potentially lead to law and order issues.

In the case of Dr. Parminder Maheshwari, he is facing charges under IPC Section 153A, concerning the promotion of enmity between groups, and Section 295A, which pertains to intentional acts aimed at harming one’s religion or religious beliefs.
