Srinagar police have issued a warning about a rising scam in which fraudsters impersonate officials from security and intelligence agencies, including the police, CBI, or TRAI.
The scammers intimidate their targets by falsely accusing them of serious crimes, such as financial fraud or harassment, and threatening immediate arrest.
“These scammers create a sense of urgency by citing fabricated charges, like involvement in drug trafficking or money laundering,” said a police spokesperson.
“They leave victims with two options: either visit the nearest police station within 12 hours or provide a statement through a WhatsApp video call.”
Most victims, fearing arrest, opt for the video call, during which the scammers appear in uniform, pretending to be inside a police station.
“During the call, they ask for sensitive personal information, such as Aadhaar details, under the pretense of verifying identity,” the spokesperson added.
Srinagar police have urged the public to remain cautious. “We advise everyone to verify the authenticity of calls, especially those claiming to be from authorities. Never share personal or financial details over the phone, and immediately report any suspicious activity by dialing 1930,” the police statement concluded.
