Pertinently, a viral video showing tourists consuming alcohol on a Shikara in Srinagar’s Dal Lake sparked outrage in Jammu and Kashmir.
Tanvir Sadiq, the chief spokesperson of the National Conference, strongly condemned the incident on social media. He criticized the behavior as vulgar and un-Islamic, stating, “Under the garb of ‘Kashmir badal raha hai’, the government must remember that such behavior is not acceptable here. A modern society doesn’t dance vulgarly in the streets or drink in public. These acts must end under the guise of tourism.”
Sadiq called for strict enforcement of laws banning public drinking, emphasizing the importance of respecting local cultural and religious norms.
Consuming alcohol openly in a Shikara, in the land of Sufism – Kashmir, is unacceptable. Such behavior spoils our culture and society. I have forwarded the clip to the concerned SDPO Nehru Park. Strict action must be taken against these tourists. @SrinagarPolice pic.twitter.com/htYcVCK6TC
