Several viral videos showing tourists drinking alcohol in public spaces in Kashmir have sparked widespread criticism and outrage across various sections of society.
The incidents have reignited debates on cultural preservation, legal enforcement, and public behavior in the region.
The videos, widely circulated on social media, show tourists openly consuming alcohol, has lead to anger among local Kashmiris, many of whom took to social media platforms to express their displeasure, highlighting the violation of both the region’s cultural values and legal norms.
Arif Husain, a social media user wrote, “Tourists are welcome in Kashmir. We want more and more tourists in Kashmir. but they are not allowed to disrespect the culture, traditional and the beliefs of a place. We ask the Police and government to initiate action in their regard.”
One social media user, Waqar H. Bhatti, wrote, “I want to tell the tourists who come from outside that Kashmir is not Delhi or UP or Mumbai, you will not be allowed to drink alcohol openly here.”
Public drinking in Kashmir is both illegal and a violation of our cultural values. It undermines societal harmony and misguides the youth. Strict enforcement and penalties are essential to uphold the law and preserve the dignity of our region. https://t.co/ZRKPpKoZFy

Another user, Shazia Rah, pointed out the legal aspect, stating, “Public drinking in Kashmir is both illegal and a violation of our cultural values. It undermines societal harmony and misguides the youth. Despite Section 50-A of the J&K Excise Act 1958, prohibiting alcohol consumption in public spaces or places of worship, authorities have failed to enforce strict action. Disappointing.”
The criticism extended to comparisons with other regions, with Mir Maheen commenting, “This is so insane. They are publicly flaunting alcohol in Kashmir, and if we even talk about beef, then we will be punished. Hypocrisy and bias.”
Another user, Sam Khan, wrote, “They are now dancing in Kashmir. Getting drunk and dancing outside mosques in UP wasn’t enough.”

The outrage has prompted political leaders to take notice. Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi, National Conference MP from Srinagar, has called for a complete ban on alcohol in Jammu and Kashmir.
Earlier this year, he announced his intention to introduce a private member’s bill in Parliament seeking the prohibition of liquor and intoxicants in the region. Addressing the issue, Ruhullah emphasized the need to preserve the cultural and social ethos of Kashmir, urging strict enforcement of existing laws.
The incidents have fueled a broader conversation about the enforcement of laws and the preservation of Kashmir’s cultural identity.
Locals have demanded swift action from authorities to prevent similar instances in the future, stressing the need to uphold both legal and moral standards.
This is not the first incident of its type, earlier tourists were seen drinking on shikara ride on Dal Lake in June 2024 led to widespread criticism.
Following the viral video, the police took swift action, arresting two individuals involved in the incident.
