Water rises by three inches in an hour as Jhelum flows above danger mark in Srinagar

Water level in the Jhelum, at Ram Munshi Bagh, has increased by three more inches within just an hour on Wednesday evening, with the river crossing the danger mark in Srinagar, according to the Irrigation & Flood Control Department.

At 9:00 pm, the Jhelum was flowing at 23.12 ft at Sangam (danger mark: 25 ft), 21.10 ft at Ram Munshi Bagh Srinagar (danger mark: 21 ft), and 11.99 ft at Asham (flood declaration: 14 ft). At Pampore, the level stood at 6.08 m, well above the alert threshold of 5.0 m.

A comparison with 8:00 pm readings shows the water at Sangam has fallen slightly from 23.35 ft to 23.12 ft, while at Ram Munshi Bagh it rose marginally from 21.07 ft to 21.10 ft. At Asham, the water climbed from 11.83 ft to 11.99 ft within an hour.

Among tributaries, Vishow Nallah at Khudwani was recorded at 7.48 m (danger mark: 8.50 m), Rambiyara Nallah at Wachi at 2.87 m (mark: 5.7 m), Lidder Nallah at Batkoot at 0.62 m, and Sindh Nallah at Doderhama at 1.70 m.

Officials said the situation is being closely monitored as water levels remain volatile.

Residents in low-lying and flood-prone areas have been advised to stay alert and maintain contact with local administration for updates.
